Switchboard Thermal Imaging

Why It Matters
Regular, scheduled thermal imaging inspections of a building’s switchboard/s should be an essential part of every preventative maintenance program. An inspection is the quickest and most effective way to detect faults and prevent them from becoming serious problems. Considering most of the electrical issues identified on a thermal imaging report will not be noticed on a visual inspection, thermal imaging inspections are one of the most critical services you can employ to reduce the risk of unforeseen equipment failures and ensure your workplace is a safe one.

Electrical Switchboard Thermal Imaging Benefits

A thermal imaging scan of your switchboard is one of the best available methods of preventing equipment failure and they are becoming mandatory in some insurance policies.

Thermal imaging is conducted during normal operating conditions, so there is no loss of power or interruption to your workflow. The camera looks for hot spots which are usually caused by electrical resistance or excessive friction. Underlying problems can then be diagnosed. Some examples include:

  • Loose connections
  • Faulty fuses or circuit breakers
  • Damaged switches
  • Overloading

Benefits for your business include:

  • Increased workplace safety
  • Reduced likelihood of a fire
  • Less chance of equipment downtime and lost profits
  • Helps meet your insurance and OH&S obligations

How Often Does A Switchboard Need A Thermal Imaging Test?

There are a number of factors that will influence how often your switchboard needs. 12 months is usually the maximum time you should wait in-between inspections but you will need to consider:

  • Conditions of your insurance policy
  • Environmental factors
  • Maintenance requirements of your specific equipment
  • Recommendations from a Certified Infrared Thermographer
