Solar maintenance

Keep your solar system performing at its best

Dirty panels, loose terminals and water in your isolators all reduce your system's output and shorten its life. A regular service catches issues before they cost you, and gets your generation back to where it should be.

Here to help

What kind of help do you need?

Most solar enquiries fall into one of two camps. Routine servicing to keep things running well, or repair work because something's gone wrong. Either way, we can help.

Dirty panels cost you money

Dust, bird droppings and grime can cut panel output by 15 to 25 percent. Cleaning gets that production back.

Catch faults early

Cracked panels, water in isolators and corroded terminals are all cheaper to fix when caught before they cause bigger damage.

Records you can rely on

We document what we check and what we find, so you've got a service history if you ever need it for warranty or selling the house.

Battery check included

If you've got a battery, our technicians check voltages and system performance as part of every solar service.

Why it matters

Why regular solar maintenance is worth it

Solar systems sit on your roof for 25 years exposed to weather, wildlife, and the elements. They keep working, but not at full capacity unless someone keeps an eye on them. A service every year or two pays for itself in production you'd otherwise lose, and damage you'd otherwise pay for.

What's included

What a regular solar service looks like

We check both halves of your system. The physical condition of the panels and roof mounting, and the electrical performance from the panels through the inverter to your switchboard. Anything that's underperforming or showing signs of wear gets flagged.

Panels and roof

  • Clean panels with professional grade solar panel cleaner
  • Inspect each panel for cracking, crazing or hot spots
  • Clear debris from underneath panels and check for pest activity
  • Check and re-seal dektite flashing where needed
  • Visual check of mounting feet and rails

Electrical and system

  • Check terminations at every isolator, the inverter and the switchboard
  • Inspect DC and AC isolators for water ingress or UV damage
  • Record total energy production at the inverter
  • Record energy exported at the meter
  • Check battery voltages and performance if your system has one
  • Compare current production against expected output for your system

How often

How regularly should you service your solar system?

For most homes in our region, a service every one to two years keeps things ticking along. Some systems need more attention than others, depending on where you are and what your panels are dealing with.

Every one to two years for most residential systems. If you're on the coast, under trees, or in a particularly dusty area, more frequent cleaning is worth doing. Annually is a sensible default for most homes.

Production drops slowly without you noticing, sometimes by 20 percent or more after a few years. Worse, small faults like water in an isolator can become safety issues or take out an inverter. Most failures we see could have been caught years earlier.

Yes. Most modern systems have monitoring you can check from your phone. If your generation has dropped noticeably or you're seeing error messages on your inverter, that's worth investigating sooner rather than waiting for a scheduled service.

Most panel and inverter warranties have language about reasonable maintenance, but they're not usually strictly conditional on a service log. The stronger reason to service is catching issues before they cause expensive damage. We document what we check either way, so you've got the records if you ever need them.

Yes. Salt air corrodes terminals faster, overhanging trees mean more debris and shading, and dust builds up faster on panels in inland or rural areas. Annual servicing is a sensible default in any of these conditions, and your technician will tell you at the service if they think you should be on a tighter schedule.

When something's gone wrong

What we do when your solar system isn't working

Solar systems fail in fairly predictable ways, from end-of-life inverters to water in the isolators. Whatever's gone wrong, our process is the same.

1

Diagnose

We start by reading inverter error codes, checking monitoring data if available, and inspecting the system on site. Most faults have a clear root cause once you know where to look.

2

Explain and quote

Once we know what's wrong, we explain it plainly and quote the repair before doing the work. If it's a 12-year-old inverter at end-of-life, we'll say so. If it's a five-minute terminal fix, we'll say that too.

3

Repair or replace

Some faults are quick fixes. Others, like an inverter past its useful life or panels that have failed beyond economic repair, are better replaced. We tell you honestly which is which.

4

Test and document

Once the repair's done, we re-test the system, record current production, and leave you with a clear summary of what was done and what we found.

Common things we see: water in DC isolators, pigeon damage under panels, inverter faults and end-of-life, panels with hot spots or cracking, and monitoring that's stopped reporting. If your symptoms match any of these, you're not alone.
