If you're new to all this, heat pump hot water often gets confused with solar hot water or a standard electric system. It's neither. Understanding what it actually is makes the rest of the conversation a lot easier.
It's the same technology as a reverse-cycle air conditioner, used in reverse. Instead of taking heat out of your house to cool it down, it pulls heat out of the air to warm your water. Because it's moving heat around rather than generating it from scratch, it's roughly three to four times more efficient than a standard electric hot water system.
A standard electric hot water system heats water by running current through an element. A heat pump extracts heat from the outside air and uses that. Three to four times less electricity for the same result.
Solar hot water uses rooftop panels to heat water directly from the sun. Heat pump hot water uses electricity (which your solar can power, if you have it) and works 24/7 regardless of weather or roof orientation.
Worth knowing
That efficiency shows up two ways once it's in. Your running costs drop noticeably, and the government rebate brings the upfront cost right down.
And if you're worried about the cold, don't be. A frosty Southern Highlands morning won't faze a modern heat pump one bit.
Heat pump systems cost more to buy than a basic electric one, but the government STC rebate brings the gap way down. And because they use so much less power, most customers see the difference back in their bills within a few years.
Modern heat pump systems are rated to operate well below zero. Your coldest morning in Bowral isn't going to faze one. They'll pull heat out of air that feels cold to you and it'll still work.

What to expect
Most heat pump hot water installs are a single-day job for our team. The tank goes outside (it needs airflow), the old system gets disconnected and hauled away, and the plumbing and electrical gets sorted in-house.
A few specifics worth knowing before your site visit, especially if you're currently running on gas or if you've got a tricky spot for the tank.
Heat pumps need airflow to work properly, so they're installed outside. Usually where your existing system is now, sometimes in a better spot. Our estimator will check your layout at the site visit and talk through the options.
We take out your old unit and dispose of it responsibly. If it's gas, we disconnect the tank itself. See the next point for what happens with the gas line.
If you're coming from gas hot water, the line needs to be decommissioned by a licensed plumber. We work with a trusted plumbing partner who can handle this for you as part of the install, or we can coordinate with your plumber if you prefer. Either way, it's handled properly and you don't have to chase it.
Heat pumps need a dedicated electrical circuit and connection to your existing hot water plumbing. Both are handled in-house by our qualified electricians. Our estimator will confirm what's required for your setup at the site visit.
Rebates and incentives
Heat pump hot water qualifies for Small-scale Technology Certificates, or STCs, because it displaces grid electricity that would otherwise be spent heating water with a conventional system. The government pays you for making that switch, via us, via the installer.
In practice, it means your quote has a discount already applied. You don't claim anything back, you don't chase paperwork, we handle the whole process. The value depends on your system, your zone, and the current STC market price, which is why we don't quote a specific figure up front.

Around 10 to 15 years for a quality unit, with good servicing. That's roughly the same lifespan as a standard electric system, but over that time a heat pump is using three to four times less power, which is where the savings stack up.
They make some noise because there's a fan drawing in air, but it's similar to an outdoor AC unit. Most modern heat pumps run around 45 to 55 decibels at the unit, which is roughly the level of a quiet conversation. Your estimator will talk through placement options so the unit isn't sitting under a bedroom window.
Heat pump systems come in a range of tank sizes, usually 215L, 270L or 325L, and we'll recommend a size based on your household size and usage patterns. They also reheat at any time of day. Traditional electric tanks often only heat overnight on off-peak supply, so a properly sized heat pump usually gives you more hot water availability than the system you have now, not less.
