Most houses built before the mid-2000s have switchboards designed for a much simpler time. A fridge, a TV, some lights. That's not how people run their homes anymore. Modern living means air conditioning, induction cooktops, EV chargers, battery systems, pool pumps, and a dozen appliances full of electronics that older gear simply wasn't designed to handle.
An old switchboard isn't inherently dangerous, but it's almost always the bottleneck. It's what's stopping you from adding solar, or a battery, or an EV charger. It's why half your power goes out when you run the kettle and the microwave at once. And without modern safety switches, it's what's standing between you and some serious protection against electrical faults.

The process

For planned work, an estimator visits to scope the job. For faults, we send a qualified electrician out to diagnose and fix what we can on the spot.
Quoted work comes with a detailed itemised quote before anything happens. Fault work gets priced on the job with no surprises, either a fix-on-the-spot rate or a follow-up quote for larger work.

A few telltale signs. If you've got ceramic fuses (the old-style porcelain fuses that hold a wire), if your board doesn't have safety switches covering every circuit, or if the fuses keep tripping when you run normal appliances, it's time for a look. Our electricians can give you a clear read after a site visit.
A safety switch (or RCD) cuts the power in milliseconds if it detects electricity flowing where it shouldn't, like through you. They've been mandatory on new circuits in NSW since 1991, but older homes often only have them on part of the house, or none at all. They're a serious piece of safety gear, and adding them is part of most switchboard upgrades.
We'll always do our best to help urgently, but after-hours call-outs depend on a technician being available. We can't promise same-day or overnight service the way a dedicated emergency sparky would, but during business hours we're usually able to send someone out quickly. Call us first and we'll be straight with you about what's possible.
Usually it's either overloaded (too many appliances on one circuit), a faulty appliance dumping current to earth, or a damaged cable somewhere in the wall. It can also be the breaker itself aging out. It's almost always something specific and diagnosable, not a ghost in the wiring. Send a tech out and we'll find it.
Yes, and it's one of the most common jobs we do. Depending on the age of the wiring and the switchboard, sometimes it's a quick job, sometimes it needs a bit more work to do it safely. Our estimator will look at it and tell you what's involved before any work starts.
Legally in NSW, yes. Any work on fixed wiring, including replacing a light fitting that's hardwired in, has to be done by a licensed electrician. Plug-in lamps and pendants on plug-in cables are fine to swap yourself. If it's hardwired, give us a call, it's usually a quick job.
